Flood protection and nature Ooijen-Wanssum

Michel Heesen joined the Quality-team of ‘Gebiedsontwikkeling Ooijen-Wanssum’, advising on integral area development, landscape design and nature development. In the floodbed of the river Meuse, between the villages Ooijen and Wanssum (province of Limbourg), a number of flood protection measures have been executed to improve water safety. A dried-up branch of the river was reactivated, dikes strengthened and new flood planes introduced. In the village of Wanssum, the existing harbour has been extended and a new ring road was build to relieve the old village of heavy vehicles. The integral area development improves water safety and offers new opportunities for nature, recreation, agriculture and economic development.

Awards: Ruimtelijke kwaliteitspluim 2018, Waterinnovatieprijs 2019, Gouden Piramide 2020.
