Dive-under in dike amidst cultural heritage

2016-2020 | Infrastructure in a remarkable setting: a dive-under in a dike, between a listed building and a memorial site for the Royal Airforce. The dive-under is equipped with a massive, sliding sluice-gate, integrated in the dike. The steel door can be closed in case of rising waterlevels. The visibility of these measures has been kept to a minimum: the lane of old trees on top of the dike was preserved. All machinery for the sluice-gates has been placed in a tiny building. The building resembles the exisiting houses along the dike and provides solarenergy for the LED-lights in the walls of the dive-under. A difference in brick-colours shows the seawater-level and the pavement on the dike shows the years of deadly floods in the past.
