Dive-under Zwolle-Herfte

2018-2021 | The existing railway between trainstation Zwolle and neighbouring community Herfte was a bottleneck in the national railwaynetwork. In order to improve this, railway capacity was doubled. This large infrastructural project included the realisation of new bridges, overpasses and bicycle tunnels, as well as the transformation of 10 hectares of landscape. Along the railroad a honey-highway has been created: grassland vegetation rich in flowers, ensuring prolongated nectar availability. Existing, graffiti-sensitive objects were provided with a variety of climbing plants, rendering them invisible in upcoming years. One of the key features is a new train crossing: a ‘dive-under’. The sand excavated on site to create this tunnel, was compressed. The resulting blocks were used to construct the walls of the dive-under. A circular use of material.
