European highways: a 25,000 km road trip

2007-2012 | Michel Heesen and cameraman/ photographer Hans Stakelbeek made a 25,000 km road trip on the longest designated routes in Europe: European highways E75 and E50. Goal of the project was to reflect on the current state of infrastructure design in European countries. Heesen and Stakelbeek documented routes on photo, film and through interviews with its ‘inhabitants’ (waitresses, shopkeepers and so on). The project resulted in exhibitions in Rotterdam and Maastricht, a number of lectures and debates (Amsterdam, Bratislava, Delft, Donetsk, Istanbul, Kiev, Milan, Rotterdam, Ternopil, Volgograd) and a scientific publication on the applied method of research.
